An embedded (or dedicated) system is an electronic processing system designed specifically for a special purpose, often with an ad hoc hardware platform, integrated into the system it controls and capable of handling all or part of its functionality.
We encounter examples of Embedded Systems during many of our daily activities: ATMs and POS devices ARE dedicated systems, as are biomedical equipment such as ultrasound or MRI machines, digital TV decoders and broadcasting systems, printers, copiers and routers; even our mobile phones and other mobile devices.
The embedded system is an increasingly relevant processing system in the years in which the potential of the Internet of Things is being explored.
