SMART networks

Smart networks, immediate responses

When telephone operators decide to launch new services, the network often needs to be re-configured and new equipment needs to be installed on-site.

These two changes require additional space, energy, and qualified maintenance personnel.

In the same way that applications are supported by dynamically configurable and fully automated cloud environments, virtualised network functions enable telecommunications networks (and the core network, in particular) to be agile and to respond automatically to the needs of the traffic and services circulating on them.

From dated infrastructure to the cloud

The de-facto standard is the NFVI (network functions virtualisation infrastructure) model described by ETSI. Key enabling technologies chosen by SCAI Connect for this vision include SDN (software-defined networking) and NFV (network functions virtualisation).

SDN and NFV are complementary but increasingly interdependent. While the former provides the means to dynamically control and provision networks as a service, the latter offers the ability to manage and virtualise network functions and transform them into higher-level services.

The aim is to use virtualised platforms on the cloud to migrate users connected to an  ‘old’ infrastructure based on monolithic technologies.
